Instant Tea

Tea is an aromatic beverage. After water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. It has a cooling, slightly bitter, astringent flavor which many enjoy. Tea plants come out from seed or by cutting. It takes approximately 4-12 years for a new plant to bear seed & about 3 years before a new plant is ready for harvesting. Tea requires at least 127cm (50") of rainfall a year. It prefers acidic soil. It grows at a height of 5000-7000 feet. Tea bushes do not grow well in stagnant water. A plant will grow a new leaf or a new bud every 7-15 days during the growing season. The leaves which are slow in development always produce better flavored tea. Size of the leaf is the chief criterion for classification of tea plants. India produces Oolong, Silver tips, CTC (cutting-twisted-curling), Dust & Green Tea.

Types of Tea

In the tea industry, tea is defined as the dried processed leaves of tea plant. Commercially, there are three major varieties of tea plants: the China type, the India (Assam region) type, and the Hybrid type (a cross breed of the China and India types). There are four major types of tea: White, Green, Oolong and Black. All these teas come from the leaves of the same tea plant. If the leaves of the tea plant are immediately dried and then heated (steamed), the tea leaves remain green. If left to wither, the leaves are transformed through a process known as oxidation (also known as fermentation) into black tea.

Silver tips (White Tea)

This type of tea is very costly. It is used for medical purpose.

Green Tea - AFGANISTAN & AFRICA

Green tea does not taste like the regular tea. Different kinds of green tea have different flavors, but they do have a taste in common. Green tea is not usually served with milk or sugar. A green tea plant is identical to a black tea plant - the only difference is the manner in which tea growers process the leaves.

Oolong tea

The production of oolong requires that the leaves be processed directly after picking. First the leaves are made stiff in the sun for a short period of time. They are placed into baskets and shaken, which bruise the leaves. The leaves are then spread out to dry. After a period of time--less than 2 hours the tea is fired, which stops the fermentation process.

Instead of the leaves being rolled as a final stage, they are passed through a series of cylindrical rollers with hundreds of small sharp "teeth" that Crush, Tear, and Curl.

DUST Tea - EGYPT & YAMAN

Dust tea is a low-quality grade of fine grained black tea. Traditionally these were treated as the rejects of the manufacturing process in making high quality leaf tea like the Orange Pekoe. When leaves break or get crushed during the manufacturing process they are variously labeled as Broken Orange Pekoe. The smaller the particle, the lower the quality.

This traditionally low quality tea has however experienced a huge demand in the developing world in the last century as the practice of tea drinking became popular.

Cheap tea stalls in India prefer dust tea because it is cheap and also produces a very strong brew - consequently more cups are obtained per measure of tea dust.
